Sarasota’s own China Smith, the two-time former National Boxing Association Heavyweight Champion of the World, is known as the ‘People’s Champ’ for his commitment to his community and specifically to the youth in Sarasota and Manatee counties. China has a non-profit organization dedicated to helping kids called China Smith & Friends, runs the Manatee County Police Athletic League kids’ fitness program and Team China Smith’s Boxing Extreme Fitness Program and summer camp.
The heavyweight champion southpaw, known in the ring as The Dragon, has been
honored with a Key to the City of Sarasota and even has a day named for him in Sarasota: China Smith Day.
China’s Golden Gloves Boxing event in February of 2016 was a knockout and was featured online and on broadcast TV.
